Rules of the Montana credit

The Montana Earned Income Tax Credit is refundable and equals 10% of the federal earned income credit for tax year 2025. House Bill 337 of the 2025 session, chapter 227 of the session laws, raises it to 20% for tax years beginning after December 31, 2025. A family with two children at the federal maximum therefore receives $715 for 2025, filed in 2026, and $1,463 for 2026, filed in 2027, since the federal maximum itself rises to $7,316. Montana takes the amount from the federal return, so the federal eligibility rules apply, including the age range for workers without a child. The credit is claimed on Form 2. Switch the tax year in the calculator above to compare both years for your household.

Planning for the 2027 filing season

The doubling is one of the larger state changes for 2026. A household that receives $300 from Montana for 2025 can expect roughly twice as much for 2026 at the same income. The enrolled text is in the session law, chapter 227.

Questions people ask

What is the largest Montana earned income credit for 2025?

For tax year 2025, filed in 2026, the calculator finds at most $433 with one qualifying child, $715 with two and $805 with three or more, and $65 for a worker without a qualifying child. These are the peaks of the curve for a head of household; your amount depends on your earned income and AGI.

Is the Montana credit refundable?

Yes. Montana Earned Income Tax Credit is refundable: when it is larger than the Montana tax you owe, the difference is paid to you, and a household with no Montana tax at all receives the full amount. That makes it worth the same to a worker with low income as to one who owes tax. You claim it on Form 2, Schedule III.

Who runs the Montana credit and where is it claimed?

Montana Department of Revenue administers it, and the claim goes on Form 2, Schedule III, filed with your Montana income tax return for the same year. It starts from your federal earned income credit, so the federal return comes first and its figures carry over.
