Rules of the Missouri credit

The Missouri Working Family Tax Credit equals 20% of the federal earned income credit and is nonrefundable: it can bring Missouri income tax down to zero, but the part above the tax is not paid out. It is claimed on Form MO-WFTC. A family with two children at the 2025 federal maximum of $7,152 computes $1,430, but can use it only up to its Missouri tax. Many households at the federal maximum owe less than that, so the usable amount is often lower than the computed one. Missouri also applies its own limit on investment income, $4,400 for 2025, lower than the federal $11,950: above it, the Missouri credit is lost even when the federal one is allowed. Enter your Missouri tax before credits in the calculator above to see the usable part.

Who benefits most

A nonrefundable credit favors households in the phase-out range, who have enough Missouri tax to absorb it. A household on the plateau with low tax uses only part of it. The Department of Revenue answers questions on the investment income limit and the form.

Questions people ask

What is the largest Missouri earned income credit for 2025?

For tax year 2025, filed in 2026, the calculator finds at most $866 with one qualifying child, $1,430 with two and $1,609 with three or more, and $130 for a worker without a qualifying child. These are the peaks of the curve for a head of household; your amount depends on your earned income and AGI.

Is the Missouri credit refundable?

No. It can lower your Missouri income tax to zero, but any part above that tax is lost, and nothing is paid out. A household that owes no Missouri tax gets no benefit from it. Enter your state tax before credits in the calculator to see the part you can use. It is claimed on Form MO-WFTC.

Who runs the Missouri credit and where is it claimed?

Missouri Department of Revenue administers it, and the claim goes on Form MO-WFTC, filed with your Missouri income tax return for the same year. It starts from your federal earned income credit, so the federal return comes first and its figures carry over.
