Rules of the Iowa credit

The Iowa Earned Income Tax Credit equals 15% of the federal credit and is refundable. It is entered on line 25 of the IA 1040 and follows the federal eligibility rules, so a household that qualifies for the federal credit qualifies in Iowa, for 15% of the same amount. With one child at the 2025 federal plateau of $4,328, it adds $649; with two children at $7,152, $1,073; with three or more at $8,046, $1,207. A worker without a qualifying child can receive up to $97. Iowa has been lowering its income tax rates to a single rate, which does not change this credit, since a refundable credit is paid whatever the tax. The Iowa Department of Revenue explains the credit in the expanded instructions for the IA 1040. For 2026, the rate is still 15%.

Questions people ask

What is the largest Iowa earned income credit for 2025?

For tax year 2025, filed in 2026, the calculator finds at most $649 with one qualifying child, $1,073 with two and $1,207 with three or more, and $97 for a worker without a qualifying child. These are the peaks of the curve for a head of household; your amount depends on your earned income and AGI.

Is the Iowa credit refundable?

Yes. Iowa Earned Income Tax Credit is refundable: when it is larger than the Iowa tax you owe, the difference is paid to you, and a household with no Iowa tax at all receives the full amount. That makes it worth the same to a worker with low income as to one who owes tax. You claim it on IA 1040, line 25.

Who runs the Iowa credit and where is it claimed?

Iowa Department of Revenue administers it, and the claim goes on IA 1040, line 25, filed with your Iowa income tax return for the same year. It starts from your federal earned income credit, so the federal return comes first and its figures carry over.
